Big news: more than a year after announcing plans to bring back the 1950s table that “began the flatpack revolution”, IKEA has started selling some of the original mid-century furniture it offered back in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. If you’re a huge fan of Don Draper and his cohorts of Mad Men, then we can safely assert that you will fall for these IKEA re-editions.
As part of the brand’s celebration of its 70 years in business, IKEA is reintroducing a limited-edition of 26 different pieces of furniture, lighting, textiles, and tableware from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is called the Årgång collection, and it is only available for a limited time and in specific countries at the moment (Sweden, Germany and Spain). One other thing: the items can only be purchased in-person at some specific stores (Ikea recommends calling in advance). So don’t just pop-up at the nearest IKEA store; you might very well end-up disappointed.
Some great-looking finds in this collection include the butterfly chair, the Ekenäset chair (which runs $200 – hunt around any modern furniture store and the same thing will cost you two to four times as much), circular chairs and the red glass Gårdskär pendant lamp (seen in the snippet of a 1956 IKEA catalog – don’t miss to check the gallery below) as well as a few of the pristine, Nordic designs that came to define quintessential mid-century modern furnishings.
The Årgång collection is available now at IKEA Sweden, IKEA Germany and IKEA Spain. We haven’t seen it available States-side or in other European countries yet, but if you don’t mind the translation in the meantime, you can have a look at it in Swedish, German or Spanish.
