2. Melrose Trading Post

The Melrose Trading Post is a market specialising in vintage items, antiques, art and collectibles, held once a week in the car park at Fairfax High School. Nearly 200 eclectic vendors gather in this space to showcase antiques, vintage clothing, records, furniture, plants, quirky treasures and eclectic knick-knacks.

Although it is smaller than the Rose Bowl flea market, the Melrose Trading Post nonetheless attracts 3,000 to 4,000 visitors every week. Since the Melrose Trading Post is a fundraising event for Fairfax High School, shoppers can feel good about doing their bit while shopping at the flea market (keep that in mind when haggling…).

Admission costs just $3, which is much better value than the $9 charged at the Rose Bowl. What’s more, the Melrose Trading Post flea market takes place weekly instead of monthly. 3. Long Beach Antique Market

Spread out over 20 acres, the Long Beach Antique Market is home to 800 vendors. Browse through mid-century finds, Victorian treasures and vintage memorabilia at this flea market, held on the third Sunday of every month.

Lynn and David have been hosting the flea market at Veterans Stadium since 1892. They enforce a ’20-year rule’, so you can be sure that those 1950s Pyrex bowls aren’t fake reproductions.

4. GCC Swap Meet (permanently closed)

Held in the Glendale Community College car park, this flea market is full of vintage junk and oddities. The GCC Swap Meet in Los Angeles is usually open on the third Sunday of every month.

Spread over 70,000 square feet, it offers an impressive selection of second-hand goods and antiques. You can find mid-century ornaments, retro clothing and vintage homeware, such as old-fashioned radios, dial phones and soda siphons.

The prices are very reasonable, and admission is free! Some dealers set up earlier than the suggested start time of 8 am – if you get there at 7 am or even 6 am, you will most likely find lots of vendors ready and waiting to sell their vintage goods.

5. PCC Flea Market

Located on the Pasadena City College campus, the PCC flea market attracts visitors from across Los Angeles. Held on the first Sunday of every month, entry is free of charge.

With over 400 vendors, customers are sure to find something that takes their fancy. There is even a whole section dedicated to vinyl records to keep die-hard music fans happy. You can rummage through old-fashioned toys, Victorian oddments, shabby-chic furniture and kitsch 1950s-style accessories.

It’s common knowledge that sellers at most flea markets often pack up early. However, at the PCC Flea Market, almost all of the sellers stay until 3 pm — some even stay longer. Shoppers never feel rushed or stressed; the PCC flea market boasts a calm and relaxed shopping atmosphere.

6. Santa Monica Airport Antiques & Collectibles

7. Topanga Vintage Market

Showcasing the very best of LA, Topanga Vintage Market offers restored furniture, handmade gifts, unique jewellery and collectible toys. With 180 of LA’s best vintage, antiques and collectibles dealers, Topanga Vintage Market is an eclectic open-air market not to be missed, where flea market enthusiasts are almost guaranteed to find treasures.

The Topanga Vintage Market takes place on the fourth Sunday of every month (not necessarily the last Sunday, as some months have five Sundays). Here, you can find stylish vintage clothing, musical instruments, upcycled furniture, mid-century accessories, collectible toys, shabby-chic furniture and eclectic vintage costume jewellery.

Entry costs just $3, and veterans and children under 12 are admitted for free. Customers are advised to arrive early, as items sell quickly at this market! 8. Venice High Flea Market

The Venice High flea market embodies the essence of a flea market: it’s affordable, relaxed, and brimming with intriguing items. You can find rare vinyl records, engraved silver cufflinks and postcards showing California in the 1960s.

This flea market, arranged by the Gondolier Booster Club, a not-for-profit organisation that supports the students and faculty of Venice High School in Los Angeles, takes place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. Please note that hardly any of the vendors accept cards, so make sure you withdraw cash beforehand. Another interesting fact: all of the exterior shots from the famous 1970s film Grease were filmed at Venice High School!
